VE (Volunteer Examiner) Session Info

A VE (Volunteer Examiner) Session is the time when amateur radio license exams are given.  At a VTARA VE session, tests are given for all three classes of the United States Amateur radio license.  In order, these classes are Technician, General, and Amateur Extra.  Higher class licenses come with more operating privileges.

  • Mar 10, 2020 at 7 PM McBryde 455
  • Apr 14, 2020 !!!CANCELLED!!!

The exam sessions will be held at McBryde Hall, 455 Stanger St, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Parking is available next to the building. Note that parking on campus after 5 PM is free in both F/S (Faculty/Staff) and C/G spots.  The Drillfield has different rules, so don't park there.  Town metered spots are also free at this time.

These tests are coordinated by the Laurel Amateur Radio Club (LARC) Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (VEC) according to the rules set forth by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). There is no fee for LARC sessions.

When you come to take an exam, please bring:

  • Photo ID
  • FCC Registration Number (FRN) 
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Calculator (optional; we reserve the right to clear/check calculator memory or deny its use)

Local Non-VTARA Sessions:

Roanoke Valley ARC VE testing will be held on the 3rd Sunday of each month in downtown Roanoke at the Red Cross building on Church Ave at 2pm. There is no testing the months of June and December.

Tests are given at the Radford Public Library (across from Applebee's in Radford)
